Party favours for children that are not sweets
Party favours for children that are not sweets
The favour bag has a difficult job: it has to be exciting when opened, occupy a child for a while, and not annoy the adult who takes it home. Sweets solve the first and fail the third. Glow favours solve all three reasonably well.
Why glow items work
They are cheap enough to give one to everybody, they are activated rather than merely owned — bending a stick to light it is an event — and they have a natural end point, so nothing accumulates in a drawer for years.
They also work best exactly when a children’s party starts to lose momentum, which is when the light drops.
Connectors are the real toy
A bag of glow sticks is fine. A bag of glow sticks with connectors is a construction set: two sticks and a connector make a bracelet, several make a necklace, a handful make glasses or a ball.
The building occupies far more time than the wearing does. Where a pack includes connectors it says so, and it is worth checking rather than assuming.
Wearables
Light-up glasses, headbands and rings sit at the other end: brighter, reusable, battery-powered, and better in photographs. They cost more per child, so they suit smaller parties or a mixed bag where one wearable is the centrepiece and sticks fill the rest.
Check whether batteries are included. A light-up item that does not light up on the day is worse than not having it.
Timing the handout
Chemical glow sticks cannot be switched off. Handing them out at two in the afternoon wastes the brightness on daylight and produces a bag of dim sticks by the time it matters.
Hold them back until the light drops, then hand them out as a moment in itself. It works as a scheduled event in a party that is running out of structure.
Ages and supervision
Manufacturer age guidance on glow products exists mainly because of the sealed liquid and small connector parts. Where a maker states an age, the listing repeats it, and it is worth following rather than judging by appearance.
For very young children, battery-powered wearables avoid the sealed-liquid question entirely.
Quantities
Two to three glow items per child is a realistic figure if connectors are involved, because building things uses them up. One wearable per child is enough on its own.
A hundred-piece mixed pack covers a party of fifteen to twenty comfortably, with spares for the ones that get dropped.
What to avoid in a favour bag
Anything that needs assembly by an adult, anything with many small separable parts that will end up on a floor, and anything so good that it competes with the birthday child’s presents. Favours should be small pleasures.
Practical checks before ordering
- Check whether connectors are included — they are most of the play value.
- Check for batteries with any light-up wearable.
- Allow two to three glow pieces per child.
- Read the maker’s age guidance.
- Hold chemical glow items back until dusk.
