Building a balloon garland, start to finish
Balloon garlands look complicated and are mostly patience. There is no special skill involved; there is a method, a quantity of balloons that surprises people, and about two hours the first time you do one.
What you need
- Balloons — roughly a hundred per ten feet of garland, in a mix of sizes.
- Balloon decorating strip: a plastic tape with holes along it.
- A hand or electric pump. Inflating a hundred balloons by mouth is not realistic.
- Glue dots for filling gaps.
- Command hooks or tape to hang it.
Nothing here needs helium. A garland is air-filled and attached to a wall, so helium adds cost and nothing else.
Choosing sizes
A garland made from one size looks like a row of balloons. A garland made from a mix looks like a garland. The usual approach is a majority of standard balloons, a smaller number of larger ones for anchor points, and a handful of small ones to fill gaps at the end.
Vary inflation as well as size. Deliberately under-inflating some balloons to two-thirds gives the shape more variety and helps it read as organic rather than mechanical.
The method
1. Inflate in batches
Inflate thirty or forty at a time rather than all of them, and knot as you go. A room full of loose inflated balloons is unmanageable and they pick up dust.
2. Tie in pairs
Knot two balloons together at their necks. Then twist two pairs around each other to make a cluster of four. This is the building block of the whole garland.
3. Thread onto the strip
Push the neck of each cluster through a hole in the decorating strip. Alternate the direction each cluster faces so the garland fills out in all directions rather than lying flat.
4. Fill the gaps
Once the strip is full, there will be gaps. Glue-dot the small balloons into them. This step is what separates a finished garland from an obviously home-made one, and it is worth the extra twenty minutes.
5. Hang it
Hang from the strip, not from the balloons, using hooks at intervals. A ten-foot garland wants three or four anchor points so it drapes rather than sags in the middle.
How long it takes
First time, with a hand pump: around two hours for ten feet. With an electric pump and a second person, closer to an hour. It is a good task to do the day before — air-filled garlands hold up for days.
Common problems
It looks flat. Clusters are all facing the same way. Alternate them.
It sags in the middle. Not enough anchor points, or the strip is taking weight it was not meant to. Add a hook.
There are obvious holes. The gap-filling step was skipped or there were not enough small balloons. Keep twenty small ones back for this.
Balloons keep popping while threading. They are over-inflated. Take them to slightly less than full.
